French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday he was dissolving the National Assembly and calling early legislative elections after his party's landslide defeat in elections for the European Parliament.

In an address to the nation from the Elysee presidential palace, Macron said: “I have decided to give you back the choice of our parliamentary future through a vote. That is why I am dissolving the National Assembly.” He said the vote would be held in two stages on June 30 and July 7.

The move comes as French opinion polling institutes showed the right-wing National Rally party leading the EU parliamentary election by a huge margin, defeating Macron's pro-Europe centrists in the first estimated results from France on Sunday.
